Exercising with an Illness
Question:
What are the rules when it comes to exercising with an illness?
Short Answer:
Exercising while sick is still certainly possible but it really depends on the type of illness, how you're feeling, and/or any specific guidance from your doctor.
Longer Answer:
The general rule of thumb is that you can still exercise if:
- You have a minor head cold
- The cold is "above your neck"
- You are feeling well
The general rule of thumb against exercising is if:
- The cold is "below the neck" (i.e. congestion)
- You have the Flu/Fever
- You are NOT feeling well enough
Some people even believe that exercising can help expedite the healing process whether from the increase in oxygen, blood circulation, and/or endorphin release! Plus, the exercise can be minor, ranging from simple walking to a modified version of your scheduled routine. But the bottom line is that you should listen to your body. If you are feeling too weak or think it can set you back, take some time off and focus more intently on your hydration and nutrition. The routines will be there whenever you are ready for them again!
